By Kwefi Bertimond, Alumnus (Computer Science Student, University of Yaoundé 1)

In honor of National Youth Day, Kwefi Bertimond, a dedicated alumnus of Jumpstart Academy Africa and a Computer Science student at the University of Yaoundé 1, shares his vision for the role of youth in building a better world. In this article, she explores how maturity and responsibility empower young people to drive peace, security, economic growth, and democracy.

In today’s rapidly changing world, youth’s role has never been more crucial. As we celebrate Youth Day, we are reminded of the immense potential that we young people hold in shaping a peaceful, secure, and prosperous future. The theme “Youth: Maturity and Responsibility for the Consolidation of Peace, Security, Economic Growth, and Democratic Process” encapsulates the multifaceted roles that the younger generation can play in fostering positive change.

Maturity: Embracing Leadership

Maturity in youth often manifests as a deep understanding of social issues and a commitment to addressing them. The young leaders of today should step up to advocate for human rights, environmental sustainability, and social justice. By participating in community initiatives, they can demonstrate that responsibility does not come with age but rather with awareness and action. Engagement in dialogue, whether through social media platforms or community forums, allows us to express our views and influence decisions that affect our lives. This active participation is crucial for nurturing a sense of belonging and ownership in democratic processes.

Responsibility: Building Peace and Security

Our responsibilities extend beyond personal development; it encompasses the collective duty to promote peace and security. In many regions, we young people are at the forefront of peacebuilding efforts, mediating conflicts and fostering understanding among diverse groups. The ability for us to connect with peers across cultural divides makes us effective advocates for non-violence and reconciliation. Moreover, we have the power to challenge the status quo and demand accountability from leaders. By organizing peaceful protests and campaigns, we can hold governments and institutions responsible for upholding democratic values and human rights.

Economic Growth: Innovators and Entrepreneurs

We young individuals are supposed to drive economic growth through innovation and entrepreneurship. With creativity and fresh perspectives, we should be launching startups that address pressing societal issues while creating jobs. By leveraging technology and social media, we will find new ways to engage in economic activities that contribute to our communities. If we invest in youth-led initiatives, we will not only stimulate economic growth but also empower younger people to take charge of their futures. This empowerment fosters a cycle of responsibility, where successful youth become role models for others.

Conclusion: A Call to Action

As we celebrate Youth Day, it is essential to recognize the power of young voices in shaping a brighter future. Maturity and responsibility are not just qualities to aspire to; they are essential for the consolidation of peace, security, economic growth, and democratic processes.

Let us support and amplify our voices, encouraging each other to take active participation in all aspects of society. By doing so, we can create a foundation for a more just and equitable world, where the contributions of young people are valued and celebrated.
